Positions Available

Coming soon - Lab Tech Position

We anticipate recruiting a research technician to run the lab, handle ordering and inventory, and conduct experiments. The incumbant will help set up the laboratory, manage transport of stored lab equipment and supplies to the Research Campus, and serve as lab manager.

Bioinformatics Programmer - Java User Interfaces and Web services for Bioinformatics

We are recruiting a bioinformatics programmer to work on an NSF-funded project titled Arabidopsis 2010: Visualization Software and Data Server for Arabidopsis.

Essential Job Duties include: Design and write genome display software using specifications provided by the Principle Investigator and collaborators. Perform custom programming tasks to support Loraine lab research. Develop web services for Arabidopsis to deliver data in machine-readable formats suitable for computational biology research.

Required Qualifications: Experience with programming in Java. Familiarity with at least one scripting language, such as Python, Perl, or shell scripting. Experience with or willingness to learn and use version-control systems, e.g., subversion and cvs. Desired Qualifications: Familiarity with Web programming and database technologies, including: Java servlets/JSP, JDBC, MySQL, SOAP/ReST web services, XML. Working knowledge of and interest in user interface design principles, low-cost usability evaluation techniques, and graphics programming in Java. Familiarity with QA techniques, unit testing, software release cycles, open source development, and Sourceforge. Experience using bio* project code. Knowledge of molecular biology and bioinformatics databases and resources such as GEO, RefSeq, Gene Ontology. Experience using Unix and Unix command line utilities.

The position will be based in at the North Carolina Research Campus currently under construction in Kannapolis, NC, about 15 miles north of the main Charlotte campus.

To apply: Send resume and letter of interest to Prof. Ann Loraine (aloraineatuncc.edu) and complete your on-line application at the UNCC Human Resources Web site -- see: jobs.uncc.edu and position number 1872.

Postdoctoral Researcher

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start in fall, 2008. The position will primarily involve bench research but will also have a substantial computational component. This position will be an excellent opportunity for a Ph.D. level scientist to gain expertise in bioinformatics while building an independent research program.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate possesses outstanding laboratory skills, including demonstrated ability to trouble-shoot and/or optimize lab protocols. Candidates should have extensive experience in Arabidopsis genetics, e.g., working with T-DNA insertion lines, growing plants, and performing crosses. He or she should have some experience applying bioinformatics techniques in research or classroom settings, such as simple scripting to automate repetitive tasks or using tools like R and Bioconductor to analyze data. Ability to learn and willingness to use software tools for managing research are absolutely essential. However, PhD-level expertise in computer science or advanced programming expertise is neither expected nor required. (We can teach you what you need to know.) The position is intended for PhD-level biologists who want to develop an independent, lab-based research program while at the same time gaining credentials in bioinformatics.

Duties: Plan, perform, and trouble-shoot laboratory experiments; Present research at scientific conferences; Provide text and data for funding applications; Write scientific articles; Assist in setting up wet lab scheduled to open in October, 2008 at the North Carolina Research Campus; Assist in interviewing and training staff research technician for the lab; Help develop requirements documents for software development projects; Perform analysis of expression microarray data and other genome-scale data sets using custom tools developed by the PI and collaborators.

Position Location: The position will be located at the North Carolina Research Campus, located around 20 minutes drive north of the UNC Charlotte main campus. Health insurance coverage is provided, with additional spousal or dependent coverage available for purchase. The applicant will join a vibrant and growing Bioinformatics program at UNCC, which currently includes ten faculty specializing in bioinformatics and computational biology.

To apply: Write aloraineatuncc.edu with the following information: (1) introductory letter describing your interests and qualifications for the position, (2) a CV, (3) the names and contact information for 3 references, including at least one co-worker (e.g., fellow graduate student) from your thesis lab.

Student Programmer(s) - Java User Interfaces for Bioinformatics Applications

We are recruiting student Java programmer(s) to develop data display software for genomics using the Genoviz SDK, an open source Java library for building zoomable, interactive genome maps. (See: http://www.bioviz.org for progress we've made thus far.) All students involved in the project will have the opportunity to publish original work and build credentials in bioinformatics software development. Applicants should be familiar with graphical user interface development in Java, usability assessment techniques, and collaborative programming with cvs or subversion. Please note that because this is a student position, we do not expect applicants to be experts in all areas, but the ability to read documentation and use it to master new areas and techniques is absolutely crucial. Deep knowledge of molecular biology and genomics would be helpful but are not strictly necessary.

To apply, email a resume and cover letter to Prof. Ann Loraine, aloraineatuncc.edu.

In your resume or cover letter, please describe:

(1) Programming projects you've done.
(2) Your programming skills (languages and tools you've used)
(3) Your availability between now and August, 2008.
(4) Your student status at UNCC (graduate student? undergrad?)
(5) Anything else we should know about you and your qualifications
